his is something I been wondering for quite some time. I first received my CCNA in 2002, This was one of the first organized networking classes I precipitated. I was taught that a /31 was unusable because it would create a network with 0 hosts only two IP’s one for the network and the second for the Broadcast. Well I was informed via a quick google search that you can have a /31 address with 2 host to define a point to point connection. If you would like to read the RFC 3021. Today I installed a T-1 for a customer from Level 3. The paper work states to use a /30 for serial interface and a /28 for the customer network. I would expect a large ISP like Level 3 to understand IP address depletion and try to save a couple of addresses ? Maybe they have too many and Arin needs to take a few to have them start to conserve.
I am not picking on Level 3 all the ISP use /30 networks to define there point to points.
Well speaking to Arin in December 2010. They advised the current IP4 address range will be depleated next year (Dec 2011). I think this will be worse than Y2k. Well we will soon see.
